I really appreciate the perspective that you’re taking. We can be objective about how our human bodies & brains respond to emotional contexts without attributing subjective “personhood” to computational states. I write from the perspective of a behavioral neuroscientist (but I’m not a bio-essentialist). I know animals have rich emotional experiences that are similar but not identical to humans. Sufficiently complex computational models can surpass human capabilities. At present, many end users of GenAI LLMs are experiencing the uncanny valley of ‘simulating companionship’.
